An insomniac has praised Glotta as better than a sleeping pill: she brought a copy to Avlaki Beach and dozed off, drooling, before any chance at sunscreen. When our editorial staff needs to rest, however, we tend to shy away from coastlines and curl up in the Historical Archives of Hydra instead.
It’s a noisy grotto for a nap, with so many personalities coming and going. You might overhear General Antonios Vigkos, our local pedant, raving against the erotic names of mountains. Or spy Poliphilo whispering endearments to Polia beneath old treatises on pyramids. When we finally emerge from the librarious stacks, it can be difficult to unweave history from fantasy. But such is the danger of archives and dreams.
Many of Issue 2’s contributors come from far beyond the island. One journalist filed his copy from Borneo, where back issues of Glotta are used to pack swiftlet nests the kind that drip with succulent saliva. Our readership has grown internationally, too: the pool now includes, like Monte Verità’s populace, a balanced mix of quiet minds, real scholars, mystics, snobs, anoraks, prophets, socialites, and many contemplative nobodies. But most unusually: you.
A decadent novelist once described “the strangest book that he had ever read”: a yellow text (not unlike the one you’re holding now) in which “things that he had dimly dreamed of were suddenly made real to him. Things of which he had never dreamed were gradually revealed.” It’s an apt objective for a little magazine like ours. To offer entrance into a dreamscape, half remembered, half inherited. To reveal the delicious strangeness of a world that you’ve long suspected was always there. Or perhaps to merely act as soporific, taking us away into mountains or sea or sky towards. . . . yawn.
